Project description

The nonlinear interaction of optical fields with nonlinear and dispersive media is in the center focus of modern optical technologies, like in data communication or in modern material research. In this project we investigate the propagation of optical pulses in special optical fiber arrangements. The technological aim is to increase the density of pulses. For this, a better analytical understanding of the qualitative and quantitative behavior of pulse solutions of suitable envelope equations is of fundamental importance and may help to redesign optical fiber arrangements. The underlying partial differential equations will be generalization of the classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation which include nonlocal linear operators to cover general dispersion relations as well as higher order nonlinearities of nonlocal type. Such models cover Raman scattering and self-steeping, but their analysis and numerics are not well developed.
