Particle-like behavior of dissipative solitons in a semiconductor laser with coherent forcing

Spatial solitons in dissipative systems are expected to be sensitive to gradients which may serve to control their motion. Unfortunately, this very delicate behavior is extremely hard to observe in optical experiments due to the presence of sample imperfections which break the translational symmetry of the system. Here we describe particle-like motion and trapping of dissipative solitons in a semiconductor-based system.
