Two state dynamics in optically injected quantum dot lasers

Uniquely among semiconductor lasers, InAs based quantum dot devices lase from multiple distinct energy states. This allows for an unconventional configuration where the the ground state is optically injected while free-running lasing is from the excited state. Several novel antiphase, dual state regimes are obtained including non-Adler excitability and long lived thermally induced bursting oscillations. I will present recent numerical and experimental results. Optical phase measurements highlight the prevalence of bound state dynamics in the system.
