Fiber-optic solitons: The telltale beat

Fiber-optic solitons are pulses of special shape and power. Pulses which only approximate a soliton but do not precisely match it are known to display shape oscillations as they propagate. By realizing that these oscillations are beat notes between the soliton and radiation background, one concludes that an evaluation of the beats can provide information about properties of the soliton. It will be shown that the beat spectrum gives insight that is often impossible to obtain otherwise, and which can be surprising.
