Abstrakt
In this talk we will discuss optimization problems involving probability constraints and discuss how in some cases these can be reformulated as bilevel optimization problems. We will show, how under some assumption, an exact penalization scheme can then be set up and derive an algorithm for its solution.

Abstrakt
We consider the problem of approximating a high-dimensional distribution by a Gaussian one by minimizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The main result extends Katsevich and Rigollet (2023) and claims that the minimiser can be well approximated by the Gaussian distribution with the mean and variance as for the underlying measure. We also describe the accuracy of approximation and the range of applicability for such approximation in terms of efficient dimension. The obtained results can be used for analysis of various sampling scheme in optimization.

Abstrakt
The first part of the talk will describe our recent work concerning the modeling of biphasic tissues composed of an elastic matrix (2D or 3D) and fluid inclusions of co-dimension 2 (0D or 1D, respectively). The model is based on a finite element immersed method where the effect of the fluid is accounted via proper singular terms. The dimensionality reduction is achieved using a reduced Lagrange multipliers formulation of the resulting PDE. The second part of the talk is dedicated to an overview of applications (past, present, and upcoming) in quantitative biomedicine focusing on the role of mathematical modeling and scientific computing for data assimilation problems.

Abstrakt
The variational treatment of evolutionary nonassociative elasto-plasticity at finite strains remains unexplored. In this direction, following the concept of energetic solutions, we present an existence result for measure-valued solutions of the quasistatic evolution problem which are stable and balance the energy. In particular, we apply a modification of the standard timediscretization scheme, considering Young measures generated by piecewise constant interpolants of time-discrete solutions of a properly defined minimization problem. A key point in our analysis is the limit passage in the dissipation. The later calls for time-continuity properties of the stresses which are not expected in the quasistatic framework. To overcome this obstacle we introduce a regularization of the generalized stress in the definitionof our energetic solutions. Joint work with Ulisse Stefanelli.

Abstrakt
The talk considers the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with smooth magnetic and electric potentials in semiclassical scaling. We analyse nonlinearly parametrized approximations by single Gaussian wave packets via the Dirac--Frenkel variational principle. We derive ordinary differential equations of motion for the parameters of the variational solution. We present L2-error bounds and unexpectedly accurate observable error bounds. This is joint work with S. Burkhard, B. Dörich, and M. Hochbruck.
