This talk is concerned with an inverse problem of determining the permeability of the subsurface from hydraulic head measurements, within the framework of a steady Darcy model of groundwater flow. The geometrically defined permeability fields, which admit a layered structure, will be identified. A Bayesian framework is applied to solve this problem using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. This algorithm provides rigorous estimates of the permeability, as well as the uncertainty associated with it, and only requires forward model evaluations.
