Microbiological images are often characterized by high noise level and bad signal to noise ratios. The distribution of gray values strongly depends on the imaging technique. The Figure shows a slice of a 3D image of a cell nucleus obtained by confocal microscopy and its reconstruction by a local constant AWS procedure. The distribution of gray values shows a clear proportionality of mean and variance.

We are studying the structure of the image rather than just denoising: edge detection, segmentation, classification, and pattern regognition
