The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises eight non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes are members of the Leibniz Association.
WIAS invites applications for a
PhD student Position

in the Research Group
”Stochastic Algorithms and Nonparametric Statistics”
(Head: Prof. Dr. V. Spokoiny) starting at 01.09.2018.
Field of activity is adaptive stochastic optimization.
Applicants are expected to have a university degree (Master or Diploma) in Mathematics. An intimate knowledge of one of the following topics
- Modern convex optimization,
- Nonparametric statistics,
- Optimal transport,
as well as software programming skills are desirable.

The initial appointments are limited for two years, but the goal is the conferral of a PhD, hence extension is possible. The reduced work schedule is 29.25 hours per week, and the salary is according to the German TVoeD scale (75%).
