Taking Back Our Rights: Copyright and Publishing in Mathematics

This breakout session is meant as an open discussion on the role of copyright in mathematical knowledge distribution. Copyright itself adheres to the original expression of an idea by default, although does not adhere to the ideas themselves - ideas such as mathematical theorems (but it would adhere to the proof and the narrative accompanying the presentation of the theorem and possible to precise expression of that theorem). The discussion could range over such topics as future models for author rights retention when publishing, alternative publishing contracts, copyright clearinghouses, attention to copyright on the incorporation of works into the DML, the role of "fair use" as an access mechanism, and copyright awareness in mathematics, to give some thematic examples.
