High speed directly modulated lasers for application in optical communication systems

Compact and low cost optical transmitters are of interest for 100G/40G short reach communication systems. The strong request for reduced power consumption focuses on high speed directly modulated laser (DML) concepts operating at low threshold and low driving currents. Short cavity DFB lasers are discussed as an approach for bitrates up to 25 Gb/s. For bitrates beyond the multi- section Passive Feedback Laser (PFL) with modulation bandwidth up to 36 GHz will be demonstrated. Experimental system performance at wavelengths of 1.3 µm and 1.55 µm will be shown.
