1.55 µm InAs/InP quantum dash based mode locked lasers for coherent optical frequency combs

The mode-locking characteristics of single section and two section InAs/InP quantum dash based mode-locked lasers are presented. Measurements of the steady-state phase difference between adjacent modes led to the group delay dispersion and the spectral phase across the entire optical spectrum. Compensation of the intracavity dispersion has allowed the achievement of very short pulse durations down to   600 fs with peak powers in excess of 1 W. The mode coherence over more than 1.5 THz optical bandwidth is also shown. These properties demonstrate the high potential of these lasers for coherent frequency comb generation.
