Pump-induced exceptional points in lasers

We demonstrate that the above-threshold behavior of two coupled lasers operating in cw can be strongly affected by exceptional points which are induced by adiabatic variations of the applied pump profile [1]. In the vicinity of these points, which are singularities of the lasing equations, the laser may turn off, although the overall pump power deposited in the system is increased. We show how this counter-intuitive effect may be probed with coupled ridge or microdisk lasers where the pump strength applied on each of the two laser components can be individually controlled.
