Rate-independent, partial damage in thermo-visco-elastic materials

This contribution deals with a model for rate-independent, partial damage in visco-elastic materials with thermal effects. In the spirit of Generalized Standard Materials, the damage process is modeled by means of an internal variable, governed by a rate-independent flow rule. The latter is coupled in a highly nonlinear way with the heat equation and the momentum balance for the displacements. We present a suitable weak formulation and discuss an existence result obtained with the aid of a decoupled time-discrete scheme and variational convergence methods. par This is joint work with Giuliano Lazzaroni (SISSA Trieste), Riccarda Rossi (University of Brescia), and Rodica Toader (SISSA Trieste).
