Mining heterogeneous data in environmental research - a way towards integration across disiplines?

Environmental research is highly fragmented in numerous scientific disciplines and sub-disciplines. A recent study provided strong evidence that the actual continuous increase of process studies does not automatically result in a more comprehensive understanding and predictability of environmental systems. Integrated models can contribute to that but are plagued by substantial uncertainties and research biases. Given the fact that enviromental data are now available at large quantities and in high quality, the question arises whether modern data science approaches could contribute to integration across scientific disciplines. Some promising examples will be presented. that point to necessary adaptations of methods and even of scientific paradigms to make full use of these new options.
